2019 Oscar Nominations

This year’s Oscar nomination are out! Tuesday morning at the crack of dawn in Hollywood the coveted and long awaited lists were shared with press and a live online audience. See the video below of the announcements. The Oscars are foregoing a host this year, so the presentation was done by Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani.

There were, as always, a few surprises and snubs. The competition for Best Picture is not locked for any film which could make this a very exciting show. Roma is nominated for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Language film. So, we will see if the Academy feels the film is worthy of both prizes. Further, Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture making it the first superhero film to join this race. Although Infinity War was, in some ways, better and more representative of the decade-long MCU story line, it’s the King of Wakanda who has the world’s attention at the Oscars.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were given nods for A Star is Born in acting categories and the film received a Best Picture nod. Yet, Bradley Cooper was snubbed for Best Director. Truth be told, Glen Close has won more awards than Gaga already for The Wife. Meanwhile, Olivia Colman has been paralleling Close with the Best Actress in a Comedy wins at multiple shows. Christian Bale seems to be a lock for Best Actor for Vice. Co-star Amy Adams may win for Vice as well which would give her a first win following six previous Oscar nominations.

The most notable snub goes to Crazy Rich Asians. More likely excluded because it is too rom-com, it was a big hit and was very well-received by critics. Crazy Rich Asians was also appreciated for its fully Asian cast with a stellar performance from Michelle Yeoh. Yet, they are no where to be seen. A nod for adapted screenplay, costumes, or production design could have brought the film to the show without inclusion for higher awards. But, alas not. Their best shot at industry recognition is the Best Ensemble from the SAG awards.

Another snub went to If Beale Street Could Talk with only nods for Regina King for Best Supporting Actress Barry Jenkins for Best Adapted Screenplay with many thinking this would be in the Best Picture race as well. With ten possible Best Picture nominations and only eight selections, it is curious that these two films are more than eligible and worthy of this recognition, but were, in fact, snubbed.

Check out the list below for all the nominees. Be sure to watch the Oscars on ABC on February 24th!
