Released 22 years ago today, July 20, The Parent Trap remains a beloved movie and a 1990’s classic. This film has captured the hearts of romantic comedy fans for decades. The story is a special combination of the youthful vision of love and a family’s drive to find each other.
The story follows two girls who meet at summer camp and quickly become rivals because of their considerable similarities. Ultimately, the girls realize they are separated twins, become friends, and form a plan to reunite their long-divorced parents, by switching lives.
The original Parent Trap created a star of Hayley Mills who played both twin sisters in the 1961 film. Lindsay Lohan also became a star because of the 1998 film, also playing both twins. The film used new-age computer techniques (of the ’90s) to capture Lindsay in both roles. The film doesn’t look digitally controlled, so the film isn’t dated to today’s well-trained CGI viewer. Most shots that used green screens aren’t noticeable at all, which is a testament to the creative team who created a strong believability for the film.
Through great performances and a quirky, fun, and charming script matched with great directing, the film remains a fan-favorite. Today the cast reunited virtually to reconnect with fans and each other to talk about a film the world hasn’t stopped watching in over 20 years.
