2021 is quickly becoming the year of Marvel. After unprecedented success with shows on Disney+, the studio is heading back to theaters. The teaser trailer for Eternals shares a good first look at the story. The clearest message of the trailer is, “throughout the years we have never interfered, until now.” The film synopsis is “The Eternals, a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years, reunite to battle the evil Deviants.”
The film’s director is reigning Best Director winner, Chloe Zhao. In rumor, Kevin Feige referenced this film as the greatest Marvel movie ever made and the first with a real shot at Best Picture. The studio would love to lead this all-star cast into some award season glory with Black Panther as the only Marvel film nominated for Best Picture.
The cast for this film is a little insane as the star-power is palpable. The lead character of the film is Sersi, played by Gemma Chan. In Chan’s first visit to the MCU she played Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel, though we don’t know if these characters are somehow related. Salma Hayek is the voice of the trailer with her character, Ajax. Angelina Jolie is playing Thena. Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington joined as Dane Whitman – sounds human, let’s see how he fits in.
Marvel Future
This film will release in theaters this November. Marvel is finally releasing Black Widow to theaters and Disney+ Premium Access in July. Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings will be released in September only to theaters. Marvel will be a big part of box office rebuilding. In 2019, with the release of Avengers: Endgame, the studio held the title of biggest box office success of all time. As 2020 churned on, rereleases of Avatar pushed that film back into the top spot. Marvel is not expected to break their own box office records with these films, but they will hopefully help the theater chains recoup some of the money lost to theater closures around the world.
