Fall is finally here! And that means TV is back! Also, September starts the transition for the movie biz from summer blockbusters to Oscar potentials mixed with Halloween horror flicks. There is a lot of great content making its way to screens this month. Many new shows are premiering on all netowrks and streaming services. The majority of series returning to braodcasts networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, & Fox) are premiering this month. Although streaming services don’t need to adhere to a seasonal release schedule, in order to compete they are also launching many new shows as well as new seasons of returning favorites on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Hulu. Here is our rundown of What to Watch: September 2019 edition.
TV
TV comedy has been changing in recent history, so standard sitcoms can now look dated before they begin. Chuck Lorre has made many smash hit sitcoms for CBS for decades and this month his latest Bob (Hearts) Abishola will be his first new show since the end of the phenomenon, The Big Bang Theory. Bob (Hearts) Abishola begins on September 23rd on CBS. Drama now takes many forms on TV, but a fan-favorite that always makes its appearnce in time for Halloween season is American Horror Story. This year’s 1984 continues the 80’s nostalgia that has taken over genre-TV and will send the company of AHS to summer camp. Look for AHS on FX starting September 18th.
On the reality TV side, a gem has made its way to HGTV, A Very Brady Renovaation. The kids of The Brady Bunch work with HGTV stars to redesign the iconic house from the show to become a mirror image of the show’s famous house set. If you are a looking a good hit of nostaglia, this is it! A Very Brady Renovation starts on September 9th.
Of course we need to mention TV’s biggest night! The Emmys are on September 22nd on Fox. This year, there will be no host following the success of this year’s hostless Oscars telecast and the rather flat reviews of last year’s Emmy hosts Michael Che and Collin Jost of SNL. This year the competition is between the women behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel looking to sweep for their second year and the final season of Veep which would give Julia Louis-Dreyfus her ninth win for TV Comedy Actress. The other big question of the night will be if the polarizing final season of Game of Thrones will take home Best Drama.
Movies
The film front will hopefully help the rather sleepy back-half of summer. Avengers Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home both made a major splash at the box office and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood made its long-anticipcated premiere all before the end of July. Now there are some major films coming to theaters this month. It Chapter Two is the terrifying follow-up to the hit, It, from 2017. This creepy clown returns to theaters on September 6th. Jennifer Lopez and her girl crew from Hustlers are looking to win the box office on September 13th opposite drama The Goldfinch.
The big weekend though starts on September 20th when Brad Pitt comes to screen for the second time this year in Ad Astra. Pitt stars as an astronaut who needs to go to space to track down his father whom he thought died decades prior on a space mission of his own. Downton Abbey doesn’t have the same big-budget scale as a space adventure, but this film, based on the phenomenon series, should hit big with fans. The show became the most successful British period drama ever, airing in over 100 countries. The film finds the Crowley family preparing for a royal visit. If neither fits your taste, check out Rambo: Last Blood as Sylvester Stallone returns as the famous Rambo to face off with a Mexican cartel.
